Comments: Written for [livejournal.com profile] sick_pride as a response to a meme in my main journal.
However, my mind has a mind of its own (ahaha) and sometimes the paths it takes are not the ones I'd have expected upon seeing the source picture. So, um, feel free to whack me in the head with a blunt object? XD

The night is long and the air is heavy around them, full of unspoken words and the past that haunts, forever and a day, until one of them is strong enough to break the ice.

The ice, both strong as steel and thin as paper, already cracking under their bare feet at times; other times, though, it feels like nothing can ever penetrate those thick layers beneath their feet.

The ice, consisting of promises never made and feelings too strong for their own good.

Toshiya calls out Kaoru’s name, and Kaoru responds with silence.

Time stays still, a long moment in between now and then; moments like these, they are aware, can stretch beyond every meaningless detail of what is and ever was, between them and others, them and life itself.

Life, and silence.

Toshiya says Kaoru’s name, again, and a lot of other things.

Calm.

Unwavering.

Pensive, even.

And Kaoru stares, acts like he hardly hears him.

But Toshiya knows otherwise. He allows a ghost of a smile, arms coming down in front of his chest, a natural barrier between two fierce souls.

Calm.

Breathe.

There’s distance between them, but hardly the bad kind; every step Toshiya takes, every move he makes, is mirrored deep within Kaoru’s eyes, and their mutual silence that now reigns speaks volumes to both.

Finally, Kaoru laughs, low and quiet, and every fiber in Toshiya’s body feels the sound like electricity, powerful and all-consuming as it runs through him in waves, deeper and stronger by every touch on sensitive skin.

It’s Kaoru’s turn to speak now, speak through actions rather than actual words, and when Toshiya finds himself pushed against the nearest wall-like surface there has never been less hesitation in their touch as the ice comes crumbling down everywhere around them.
