I hate growing older.

But really, who doesn’t?

This year I am allowed to get my hopes up, though. And maybe something else, too.

You didn’t hear me say that last part.

Anyway. The thing is, I might have overheard something a couple of days ago, a conversation to be exact, and... well, let’s just say that it brought a smile on my face alright.

Shinya always says that my smile is the most beautiful one he has ever seen, and that I should smile more.

Well, it has never been difficult for me to smile around him, he’s just too adorable for his own good and knows how to make me smile.

But now I’ve gotten off track. It happens, occasionally, even to the best ones.

(I didn’t really mean to make it sound like I was one of them, but, then again, who am I to argue if you decide to interpret it that way.)

Either way, when I woke up this morning I had a good feeling about the day, despite me officially being one year older now. And maybe it’s not that bad, well, at least not when surrounded by friends, like I was some ten hours past the time of my awaking. Those ten hours included all the normal stuff we do daily, practicing and paper work and things like that, for dear old Kaoru never wastes a chance to make us work.

Though I guess it pays off, in the end. We are, after all, rather popular all over the world right now.

But don’t tell him I said so. It’d only enlarge his ego, which is already quite big enough, thank you very much.

Anyway.

When I was there, in the centre of the attention (a usual and well-liked spot for me, if I may add), a drink in my hand and laughing friends around me, I found it hard to concentrate on the things at hand with as much enthusiasm as normally.

I tried to see him, glancing around the room to catch a glimpse of his golden locks (when he was younger and had that beautiful long blond hair of his, I sometimes teased him by telling him that he reminded me of Goldilocks; the other three would be the bears while I myself could be his knight in shining armour, if he’d like – all I got from it, though, was him requesting me of stopping with the stupidities, but I know he was amused, he just hid it too well, damn that little drummer boy) and generally just being too interested in his whereabouts.

Well, he would use the word ‘too’ in that sentence. I myself was content with simply being interested.

The reason I was so eager to see him was simple: it was him conversing with Toshiya that one time when I happened to be (purely accidentally, of course) eavesdropping.

And he said some very interesting things, then.

Mostly motivated by Toshiya, though I have a feeling that the bassist might have had an agenda of his own.

That never mattered to me, though, especially after seeing him leave the place alone, Shinya staying behind to finish some work like he told Toshiya.

When I walked to him and offered to help him with whatever it was (truth to be told, I have already forgotten because we never did much work that night) he didn’t decline like he had with Toshiya but actually accepted my offer.

Good for me, as it boosted my ego quite nicely.

And now I feel that I might finally be ready to take the most important step of them all.

So dramatic, eh?

It kind of felt like it, too, for when I finally saw Shinya he was standing next to a wall, a half-finished drink in his hands and looking like he was deep in thought.

The opportunity to surprise him was too good to be passed, so I walked to him and stopped right in front of him.

Then I kissed him.

And, to my slight surprise (for you can never be too sure about anything when no words concerning this kind of activity has been exchanged between him and myself)...

He even kissed me back.

And when we finally finished kissing, he whispered to me that he wanted to wish me a happy birthday.

I told him that now it would definitely be so.

He smiled, took my hand and led me to the door, asking me whether I’d like to skip the rest of the party and go home with him instead.

How could I turn down such a request?

So off we went, and eventually, when he ended up in his apartment and in his bed, I did get a nice reward for getting my hopes up.

And for that something else, too.

But I don’t think I need to tell you that. You probably guessed it from the very beginning.

Well, what can I say? I’m a man of little secrets, just like Shin often likes to say.

And then he smiles that adorable little smile of his, and I am doomed.

But I happen to love my life just the way it is, now that I finally have him in it the way I’ve dreamed of for so long.

And that, my friends, is true satisfaction.
